THE IMPACT OF A HOME

When a family receives the gift of a home it completely changes the trajectory of their lives. The home itself is just the first step in providing a prosperous new future for generations.

PROVIDING A HOME HELPS KEEP FAMILIES TOGETHER

Having inadequate shelter results in extreme stress. This burden can lead to separation of families as individuals are forced to look for work in other cities. Inadequate shelter can also cause parents to decide they cannot care for their children which could lead to institutionalization of the children, children being sent to live with friends or family members, or outright abandonment. All of these potential outcomes create separation of parents and children. A home keeps a family together, and allows a family to care for itself.

PROVIDING A HOME PROMOTES HEALTH & EDUCATION

Having a quality, safe shelter with a clean floor protects a family from the elements and dramatically improves their health. Kids are more likely to attend school when they aren't sick, and with a clean home they aren't as sick as often. A home helps children get an education which is a vital step in breaking the cycle of poverty.

PROVIDING A HOME GIVES DIGNITY

Having to live in inadequate housing is demeaning, dehumanizing, and negatively affects a person’s self-image. Providing a home instills pride and dignity that allows a family to care for itself and thereby care for their community as well.

PROVIDING A HOME HELPS TO AVERT TRAFFICKING

In many parts of the world, human trafficking is a migration problem. When people are separated from their community because of their unmet needs for work and housing, they are vulnerable to traffickers. A home allows a family to stay intact.

PROVIDING A HOME BATTLES EXTREME POVERTY

Shelter is a basic need and lack of it creates stress. When a family receives a home, that vital, basic need is cared for. This allows the family to put their energy and resources toward activities that will further provide for their family instead of constant worry about where they live. The gift of a safe home allows each family to plan and dream for a hopeful future. A home is a stepping stone.

PROVIDING A HOME STRENGTHENS COMMUNITIES

A home can be the catalyst that allows individuals to provide basic human needs for themselves and their families. In turn, there is a trickle down effect that creates a thriving community as quality of life improves.

A LIFETIME OF IMPACT

As far as we know, Dwellings has a 100% occupancy rate, meaning that every home we have built is occupied by the original recipient family. To date, we have seen children from almost all of the 130 recipient families complete schooling and many go on to higher education. Some of these children have even completed university and have returned to their communities to serve in areas of healthcare and education as teachers, nurses, government officials and more.

A home is just the beginning, but it’s impact is one that can, and does, transform communities. Your investment goes far beyond a single family. A single home will have a lasting impact on the generations that live there, the team of volunteers that come and serve, and the communities of both recipient and provider. You’ll be a significant part of transforming lives as you participate in providing a family a new home.
