Dwellings Cuba - What's on the Horizon?

3 years ago, Dwellings began taking steps towards establishing a new build location on the island nation of Cuba. In the past 3 years, we have successfully constructed 5 homes, as well as a location to house future teams. The lessons we have learned in these past 3 years have been monumental and the future of our ministry in Cuba is still being carved out.

Operating in a Communist country has provided a great many challenges for us as a ministry. Working in Cuba has been unlike any of our previous build locations, and we have had to grow slowly, something that we are not used to. The need is great, but the road blocks are equally great. Our in country contacts have walked us through seemingly daily lessons on how and what we can and cannot do.

Securing proper visas in order to construct homes has been difficult. More than that, securing the materials needed to build a home has proven to be even more challenging. We have met each challenge with grace and faith and we anticipate that Cuba will still be a great location for Dwellings to build homes and change lives.

Now, Cuba is preparing to introduce even more changes to their system. A new constitution has been drafted. This proposed 224 article constitution would replace the national charter drafted in 1976 following Fidel Castro’s revolution in 1959. Preliminary copies of this document have been shown to the public, but there is still uncertainty as to how it will affect religious organizations and foreign ministries.

These new laws do not change Dwellings calling and pursuits in Cuba. It is our hearts desire to see lives changed through the loving gift of a home. Currently we are evaluating our processes in the country to determine if we will be able to move forward the same as we have in other locations.

In Mexico and Honduras we are able to secure the needed materials to complete a home in 1 week or less. However, we may never arrive to that same conclusion in Cuba. Instead, we may need to change how we fund and build homes to better reflect the time it will take to secure the materials needed. A team may be able to fund a build, but only be able to participate in a percentage of the actual build. This presents new opportunities for us in how we recruit teams.

Regardless, we continue to move forward. Cuba is a beautiful country and home to some of the most amazing people you will ever meet. The need is great and we have the opportunity to meet that need. We are gaining favor with government officials and we are excited about what the future holds.

If you’ve ever considered joining Dwellings on a build in Cuba, this is the time to do so! We are currently signing up teams for 2019 and we would love to partner with you to bless a family in need. Check out our location page today and let’s work together to build homes and change lives in this new and exciting location.
