Building Homes in Cuba
During the first week of May, Dwellings volunteers were participating in the construction of our 6th home in the small town of Potrerillos, Cuba. A team from 3 different states gathered together to make the dream of Angel-Luis and his family a reality. Through creative fundraising and individual passion, the team raised the needed funds to build this home. Although obstructed by legal restrictions in country, the team managed to work alongside our Cuban build coordinators to see a large portion of the project completed.
Joe Jowdy, a member of the build team had this to say about his time in Cuba. "Cuba is an amazing and complicated country. The Cuban people must navigate much to accomplish their goals, but they do so with pragmatism, determination and a bit of good humor. They persevere. They are warm and generous, and their example is a great lesson for me in following through on the challenges in my life. I applaud Dwellings’ efforts in building homes in Cuba. They are doing good. It’s a simple proposition - to do good; not to impose, but just, to do good. Our recent trip to Cuba had challenges which slowed our progress, but this was where we and the Cuban people came together and worked together. We adapted and collaborated, and the house we set out to build progressed. It was great experience for me to see this. We overcame preconceptions and created community. I hope to return to Cuba to work on another home project. I know it will make a positive difference in the lives of people who will have the dignity of a good house in which to live."
Another team member, Ann Boyce, shared some of her journaled thoughts throughout the week. (During church service in Potrerillos) "There were Testimonials from several people who had received houses from the Dwellings program (6 built so far). The testimonials deeply touched me. A single mom with two kids needing a home, a man caring for his elderly parents, an older couple needing a clean place to live. Powerful stories – I had the opportunity to visit several of the homes. They are solidly built and have withstood hurricanes with no apparent damage". Later, Ann commented, "We are making waves and changing hearts and minds. We are a pebble creating waves in a pond and making a difference. In the meantime, we are making friends and converting enemies. "
There are some obstacles/opportunities that lay ahead of us in Cuba. There are currently high level meetings that are happening to discuss the long term work of Dwellings in the country. The result of these meetings could mean years of effective service in this amazing and beautiful country. Please join us in prayer for favor with those appointed in making these decisions.
We have a great excitement for the future of Dwellings in Cuba. Getting established here is a long process that has grown our patience and tested our resolve. We remain committed as ever in the call to build homes and change lives. Thank you to our team of volunteers and to each and every one of you who gave financially and supported us in prayer. We're looking ahead to house number 7 and the countless homes that follow. Please consider joining us in Cuba by forming or joining a team. You'll be glad you did!
